On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the H1N1 virus, more commonly known as the Swine Flu, a global pandemic. Here are some things you can do to protect you and your family from infection.
- Wash your hands. Experts say that washing your hands regularly with soap and water can help prevent the spread of viruses. Alcohol-based liquid hand sanitizers also kill germs.
- Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough. If you use a tissue, make sure to throw it away after using it. If you sneeze of cough into your hands, remember to wash them immediately.
- Avoid touching your face. If you sneeze or cough, try not to touch your nose, eyes or mouth. Also avoid standing in front of someone who is sneezing or coughing.
- Clean your home. Regularly disinfecting your home can help keep you and your family safe.
- Eat healthy foods. Maintaining a balanced diet and getting enough sleep can help prevent your immune system from getting run down.
- Avoid exposure. Limit your contact with people who have been infected with the virus. People are most likely to spread the virus during the first several days of showing symptoms.
- Relax. People who suffer from excessive stress are more prone to illness. Doctors often recommend highly stressed individuals use vitamin C daily.
- Stay home. If you begin to show any flu symptoms, stay home from work or school to prevent infecting others.
- Go to the doctor. If you think you may have symptoms of a pandemic illness, visit your doctor immediately.
